Press release

On the occasion of the centenary of the death of Amedeo Modigliani and simultaneously with the exhibition "Modigliani and the adventure of Montparnasse", which the Municipality of Livorno dedicates to its illustrious citizen, the Guastalla Centro Arte gallery presents to the public for the first time the collection, collected over the years, of works that some contemporary artists have dedicated to the great artist from Livorno.

These works have been requested on our initiative since the 1990s from important contemporary artists, often gaining enthusiastic support from them, thus becoming part of the permanent collection which is exhibited inside the birthplace of Amedeo Modigliani, managed by us, admired by numerous visitors from all over the world.

Various and heterogeneous are the "homages" in the exhibition: from Modigliani subjects reinterpreted with a pop language by artists such as Enrico Baj, Mimmo Rotella, Joe Tilson, Concetto Pozzati, Tano Festa, to the more figurative subjects created by artists such as Renato Guttuso, Emilio Greco, Aligi Sassu and others, with various original graphic techniques, contained within the 1984 album "Homage to Modigliani", published by Graphis Arte on the occasion of the centenary of the birth of the artist with introduction by Jeanne Modigliani.

And still paintings by artists with an abstract-informal language or those attributable to analytical art who want to capture some aspects of Modigliani's art from which they are freely inspired (technique, color, poetics). This is the case of Sandro Martini, Riccardo Guarneri, Elio Marchegiani, Mario Raciti: up to contemporary artists who, each with their own specific language, have dealt with the figure and art of the great artist from Livorno: this is the case of Luigi Ontani, Bruno Ceccobelli, Massimo Barzagli, Mark Kostabi, De Poli, Pietro Cascella. One section is dedicated to artists from Livorno such as Dario Ballantini, Raffaele De Rosa, Mario Madiai, Osvaldo Peruzzi, who over time have dedicated works in homage to their illustrious fellow citizen.

The exhibition conceived as a continuation and deepening of the collection that is already present in the Birthplace will remain open until February 2020 and is part of the itinerary with an exhibition itinerary created by the art galleries present in via Roma in Livorno, Modigliani sulla via di casa, the street where the house-museum is located, whose layout was curated by Guastalla Centro Arte: this initiative is part of the project of side events to the public exhibition promoted and sponsored by the Municipality of Livorno, Welcome back Dedo.
